Concretado el tríunfo de la Unidad Popular en las elecciones presidenciales de 1970, en toda la patria se realizaron innumerables festejos por la victoria del doctor Salvador Allende.
En este marco, el conjunto Inti-Illimani, entre los meses de septiembre y diciembre de 1970, graba Canto al Programa, un trabajo de musicalización del programa de gobierno del Presidente Salvador Allende, realizado como homenaje a su victoria en la campaña presidencial de dicho año. Dirigen este proyecto Sergio Ortega, autor del himno "Venceremos", y Luis Advis, autor de la Cantata Santa María de Iquique, con quienes desde entonces desarrollan una relación de colaboración musical. En la grabación de este disco participa Marcelo Coulón, en su primer acercamiento al INTI, conjunto al que llegaría de manera permanente en 1978.

Presentación del cantautor cubano Silvio Rodríguez en la Cumbre de los Pueblos, la cual reúne a representantes de partidos y organizaciones políticas de izquierda de América Latina y el Caribe. En su tercera edición, realizada en el estadio Mundialista de Mar del Plata, la Cumbre coincide con la jornada final de la IV Cumbre de las Américas, realizada en la misma ciudad balnearia con la presencia de todos los mandatarios y mandatarias del continente. La Cumbre de los Pueblos, creada como contracumbre de aquélla, celebra el fracaso de la iniciativa norteamericana de crear una zona de libre comercio desde Alaska a Tierra del Fuego conocida como ALCA (Área de Libre Comercio de las Américas), y repudia la presencia del mandatario estadounidense George W. Bush en Argentina. La actuación de Silvio Rodríguez forma parte del acto central. Ubicado frente al público y delante del palco principal encabezado por el presidente venezolano Hugo Chávez, el diputado Miguel Bonasso y Diego Maradona, el compositor interpreta los siguientes temas: “Debes amar”, “Historia de la silla”, “Sinuhé” y “Rabo de nube”. Al finalizar su participación, el cubano presenta al siguiente artista: el cantautor uruguayo Daniel Viglietti.
